About 20 more Google employees have been fired over the past week following internal protests over Google’s cloud computing contract with the Israeli government, The Washington Post reported.
The pink slips follow the expulsion of at least 28 employees and the arrest of several others last week after sit-ins at Google offices across the country, including New York and Sunnyvale, Calif. It is something.
More than 50 Google employees are believed to have lost their jobs due to protests over the $1.2 billion Project Nimbus contract.
Officials organized under the banner #NoTechForAparttheid claim the technology could allow Israel to harm Palestinians, a claim Google denies and says the deal is highly confidential. It claims it does not include the secret or military services.
The firing comes after CEO Sundar Pichai accused employees of using the company as a “personal platform” and of “fighting over disruptive issues or discussing politics” in the workplace. It also follows a company-wide memo saying that this should not be done.
“We have a vibrant, open discussion culture that allows us to build great products and turn great ideas into action. That’s important to preserve,” the memo said. It was dark. “But at the end of the day, we are a workplace, and our policies and expectations are clear. This is a business.”
Staffers who oppose the contract with Israel understandably view the issue differently.
“Companies are trying to quash dissent, silence their workers, and reassert power over them,” said a spokesperson for the opposition group, which began its first Israeli government contracts with Google and Amazon in 2021. Jane Chan told the Post.
She claimed that some of the employees who lost their jobs were “innocent bystanders” rather than protesters, a claim Google denies.
A Google spokesperson told Forbes that “all of the terminated employees were personally and categorically involved in the sabotage in our buildings,” adding that the company is “carefully discreet.” We have confirmed and reconfirmed this.”
The shooting came as protesters were accused of anti-Semitism and clashes escalated on campuses across the country.
